Can NIPT detect baby gender?

In India, no. Prenatal sex determination and disclosure are prohibited by law under the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act. This applies regardless of the technology used and regardless of the reason for asking. Laboratories offering prenatal testing in India must not report fetal sex, and clinicians must not disclose it. The prohibition exists to address sex-selective abortion, and it is enforced. Technically, some NIPT platforms analyse sex chromosomes as part of screening for sex chromosome conditions. Where testing is performed in India, that information is withheld and not reported to you or to your doctor. There is a narrow medical exception: where there is a family history of a serious sex-linked genetic condition, testing may be permitted under specific legal safeguards and documented approval. This is arranged through a genetics service, not requested informally. Please do not ask your obstetrician or laboratory to disclose this. You are placing them at risk of criminal liability, and they will decline.
