What are euploid embryos?
A euploid embryo has the expected number of chromosomes — 46, arranged in 23 pairs. This is what testing is looking for. What euploid means in practice: the chance of implantation is better than for an abnormal embryo, and the chance of miscarriage from a chromosome problem is lower. What it does not mean: It is not a guarantee. Miscarriage still occurs in 10 to 20% of pregnancies after PGT-A. It does not mean the embryo is free of inherited conditions such as thalassaemia or cystic fibrosis — those require PGT-M. It does not assess structural development, which is what your anomaly scan in pregnancy covers. It reflects a few cells taken from the outer layer that becomes the placenta, which usually but not always represent the whole embryo. A euploid result is good news and worth having. It is one piece of information about one aspect of the embryo. Because a residual chance of error remains, ESHRE recommends prenatal diagnosis is offered to all women who become pregnant following PGT — not because the test is unreliable, but because it is a selection step rather than a final answer. Cord blood testing after birth is an alternative if you prefer to avoid an invasive test.
