Can masturbation cause erectile dysfunction?
Sperm quality responds to a number of modifiable factors, though improvements take time — sperm production takes roughly 72 to 90 days, so any change needs about three months before it shows in a repeat analysis. This is the single most useful thing to know, because most people expect results far sooner and abandon changes too early. Best evidenced: stopping smoking, moderating alcohol, achieving a healthier weight, treating diabetes and other chronic conditions properly, and avoiding anabolic steroids and testosterone. Heat matters more than people expect — the testes function below core body temperature. Prolonged laptop use on the lap, frequent hot tubs and saunas, and occupational heat exposure are all worth reducing. Reasonable but less certain: antioxidant supplementation. The evidence is mixed and the effect, where present, appears modest. It is not harmful, but it is not a substitute for the measures above. Also relevant: some prescription medications affect sperm, and a varicocele may be treatable where present. Repeat the analysis after three months, and see a urologist or andrologist if it remains abnormal.
