Patient FAQs

How often is sex considered normal?

Vaginal dryness has a number of causes and is not only a menopausal issue, though it is most common then. Causes include falling oestrogen (menopause, breastfeeding, some hormonal treatments), certain medications including some antidepressants and antihistamines, insufficient arousal time, and autoimmune conditions affecting secretions. Practical management: water-based or silicone-based lubricants for use during sex, and vaginal moisturisers used regularly for ongoing comfort rather than only at the time. One point specific to conception: many standard lubricants impair sperm motility. If you are trying to conceive, use a lubricant specifically labelled as fertility-friendly or sperm-safe. Saliva also impairs sperm and is best avoided. This is a common and easily corrected obstacle that many couples never hear about. Where dryness is due to low oestrogen, local vaginal oestrogen is effective and carries minimal systemic absorption โ€” though this needs discussing with your doctor, particularly around conception. If dryness is persistent, or comes with itching, burning, unusual discharge or bleeding, see a gynaecologist to exclude infection or a skin condition.
