Patient FAQs

How to treat premature ejaculation?

Yes — several prescription and non-prescription substances affect sperm production or function, and this is frequently missed because the connection is not obvious. Among the most important: testosterone and anabolic steroids, which suppress sperm production and can cause prolonged or occasionally permanent infertility. Also relevant are some chemotherapy agents, sulfasalazine, certain antifungals, some antihypertensives, opioids, and finasteride. Recreational substances matter too — cannabis, heavy alcohol use, and tobacco all affect semen parameters. Because sperm production takes about three months, the effect of stopping something takes that long to appear, and recovery is not always complete depending on the agent and duration of use. The practical step: take a full list of everything you take, including supplements, gym products and anything bought without prescription, to your doctor. Gym supplements in particular are a common hidden source of anabolic steroids, sometimes without the buyer knowing. Do not stop prescribed medication on your own — some conditions carry greater risk untreated. Ask about alternatives instead.
