Is Duphaston safe for irregular periods?

Dydrogesterone (Duphaston) is a widely used progestogen for irregular cycles, luteal support and several other indications. It has a long track record and, unlike some progestogens, does not suppress ovulation at usual doses — useful if you are trying to conceive. One point your doctor should discuss with you if it is being considered around conception or in early pregnancy: there are published reports of an association between dydrogesterone exposure and congenital malformations. Causality has not been established, and these are considered potential associations rather than proven effects — but the signal exists and is noted in current European guidance on luteal support. That is not a reason to refuse it if it is indicated. It is a reason to ask why it is being prescribed, what alternatives exist, and whether it is needed at that particular point. For irregular periods outside of pregnancy, this concern does not arise in the same way. As always, dose and timing within the cycle matter and need to come from your doctor rather than from a previous prescription or someone else's.
